WinWin Food Safety Policy

The WinWin Standard

WinWin is built on trust. When a neighbor posts food, they're vouching for it — not just dropping it on a porch and walking away. That means taking a honest look at what you're sharing and asking yourself: would I serve this to someone I care about? If the answer is yes, share it. If there's any doubt, don't.

This policy exists to give neighbors a clear, simple framework — not to make sharing feel complicated. The goal is abundance, not anxiety.

Share Freely

These items are low-risk and always welcome on WinWin:

  • Baked goods (bread, muffins, cookies, cakes, pies)

  • Fresh produce (fruits, vegetables, herbs, garden overflow)

  • Prepared meals and leftovers — shared promptly and stored properly

  • Commercially packaged and sealed goods (chips, crackers, pasta, rice, etc.)

  • Commercially canned goods — see simple checks below

  • Eggs (in-shell, farm fresh or store bought)

  • Preserves, jams, and jellies (commercially produced, sealed)

  • Dry goods (flour, sugar, beans, lentils, coffee, tea)

  • Frozen items — shared while still solidly frozen

Share With Simple Checks

These items are perfectly fine to share — just do a quick check first. Both the poster and the claimer should verify before sharing and before consuming.

Commercially canned goods:

  • Seal is intact — lid does not flex or pop when pressed

  • No bulging, no rust, no dents along the seam or rim

  • Label is legible and identifiable

Home-canned goods: Neighbors have been sharing home-canned goods since before refrigerators existed. It's a Midwest tradition worth honoring — with a little care.

  • Lid is properly sealed — does not flex when pressed in the center

  • Jar is clean, no cracks, no cloudiness in the liquid

  • Contents look and smell normal when opened

  • When in doubt, the old rule applies: if in doubt, throw it out

Refrigerated prepared foods (leftovers, cooked dishes):

  • Stored at proper temperature (below 40°F) before posting

  • Shared promptly — pickup within the posted window

  • Poster notes how long ago it was prepared

Dairy (cheese, butter, yogurt):

  • Properly sealed or wrapped

  • Within the use-by date

  • Stored cold before posting

Never Share

These items should never be posted on WinWin. They carry meaningful risk of foodborne illness and no simple check can make them safe enough to share with a neighbor you may not know well.

  • Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, or seafood — full stop. The risk of cross-contamination and bacterial growth is too high for porch pickup.

  • Raw eggs out of the shell — already cracked and separated eggs are not appropriate for sharing.

  • Visibly spoiled, moldy, or off-smelling food — if you wouldn't eat it, don't share it.

  • Foraged mushrooms or wild-harvested items — misidentification risk is real and potentially fatal. Not appropriate for sharing with strangers.

  • Opened infant formula or baby food — once opened, these are not appropriate for sharing.

  • Anything left at room temperature for more than 2 hours — the USDA's 2-hour rule exists for good reason. Bacteria double roughly every 20 minutes in the danger zone (40°F–140°F).

  • Homemade fermented items without clear preparation notes — kimchi, kombucha, and similar items can be shared if the poster provides clear preparation context. When in doubt, skip it.

The Poster's Responsibility

When you post on WinWin, you're vouching for what you're sharing. That means:

  1. Take an honest look at the food before posting.

  2. Use the allergen chips — Nuts, Peanuts, Dairy, Gluten, Eggs, Soy, Shellfish, Spicy. Tag everything that applies.

  3. Write a condition note that tells the neighbor what they need to know. "Made this morning, stored in the fridge, still warm" is a great note. "Not sure when I made this" is a sign not to post it.

  4. Set a reasonable pickup window. Don't post something perishable with a 12-hour window on a hot day.

A Note on Allergens

WinWin's allergen chips — Nuts, Peanuts, Dairy, Gluten, Eggs, Soy, Shellfish, Spicy — are a best-effort signal from the poster. They are not a certified allergen-free guarantee. Nuts and Peanuts are listed separately because they are clinically distinct allergens.

If you have a life-threatening allergy, always contact the poster directly before claiming. WinWin's AI can help identify likely allergens from a photo, but it cannot inspect a kitchen, verify ingredients, or assess cross-contamination risk.

The Claimer's Responsibility

Claiming is an act of trust — and claimers have a role too.

  1. Read the post carefully. Check the allergen tags. Read the condition note.

  2. If you have a serious allergy, message the poster before claiming. Allergen tags are a helpful signal, not a medical guarantee.

  3. Do a quick visual check when you pick up. If something looks or smells off, trust your instincts. Don't consume it.

  4. When in doubt, throw it out. No one will know, and it's always the right call.

In an Emergency

If someone experiences a serious allergic reaction or foodborne illness after a WinWin pickup, call 911 immediately. Then contact us at hello@winwinshares.com so we can help.

WinWin is a community of neighbors looking out for each other. This policy exists to keep that community safe — not to make sharing feel like a liability. Share generously. Share carefully. Share with the same care you'd give a friend.
